Session Summaries by Physical Chemistry Tutors

Redmond, WA Physical Chemistry tutoring
In the last session with the student, we covered the reactions undergone by aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, acyl halides and anhydrides. We worked through a significant number of questions that had been assigned as review. The current set of chapters are a little bit more demanding because of the need to memorize several sets of reactions. Once the student has those memorized, I am confident she will be able to easily navigate through the problems.

Session covered basic nomenclature for alkanes and a first look at chair conformations. She is going to work through the problems for the chapters we've gone through so far and bring questions to the next session. She will also bring molecular models to aid in our upcoming sessions concerned with stereochemistry.

The student and I discussed Newman projections and the boat configuration of cyclohexane, including ring flips. These topics are both useful for imagining 3D structures in the 2D space of pen and paper. She continues to be a great student, asking questions and participating.

We went over test concepts before the student's exam on Wednesday. We started with questions that he had unanswered, and moving to new concepts that we haven't covered together yet. We jumped into many more practice problems that I created for the majority of this session. I left him with the remainder of the practice problems that I created as well.

In this tutoring session, the student and I reviewed the previous weeks' assignment. We started off going over organic chemistry and discussed about topics such as aromaticity, mono/di-substituted aromatic compound stability, SN2/SN1 reactions, and also extraction. We then went over general chemistry and talked about problems that involve acid/bases, solubility, ideal gases, and electrochemistry. She seemed to understand most of the problems that I gave her for homework and she didn't have too many struggles. I have left her with 40 more general chemistry and 20 organic chemistry problems for Friday.

At the start of today's session, we reviewed a couple of main ideas from yesterday's session on ionic compounds and concentration by doing a few practice problems. I think this was a good idea considering the student had a few sticky spots when working through them, and we were able to review them more thoroughly through our practice. After our brief review, we went on to introduce some main ideas involved in acid and base chemistry. Primarily, we talked about a fundamental (Bronsted-Lowry) definition of acids and bases, defined pH, Kw, and the pH scale, strong and weak acids/ bases and showed how simple neutralization reactions occur. To employ these concepts, we spent time practicing calculating pH of a strong acid, and calculating pH of two amounts of strong acid and base mixed together. I encouraged him to continue practicing and reviewing these concepts between this session and our next, although we do plan to do a review of this weekend's work at our next session. I'm looking forward to seeing what has been retained and continue making progress through the material.
