How can a Phonics tutor help you?

If your child is having trouble with reading, or is generally reluctant to read, the problem might actually be phonics. Phonological awareness accounts for how comfortable students are with decoding new words and navigating texts. For children who experience difficulty in this area, reading can be a tremendous chore and even an extremely frustrating experience. With many schools currently focusing on sight words and memorization, a lot of students aren't getting the phonics instruction they desperately need. If your son or daughter is experiencing difficulties with phonics, the experienced educational directors at Varsity Tutors are happy to help students in Redmond find a phonics tutor who could help them pursue their academic goals.

To strive to ensure that no time is wasted, your child's private instructor can run diagnostic assessments that will reveal where the problem areas are, whether that includes deleted phonemes, sound to word matching, or vowel digraphs. Having isolated the difficulty, the tutor can then design lessons aimed at closing knowledge gaps. During this process, you and your child could have total control over content, pacing, and methodology. If classroom work is showing that your child is struggling with initial consonant blends, the instructor can orient lessons in that direction. He or she can also help your student prepare for important exams like the Smarter Balanced, Measurements of Student Progress (MSP), and end-of-course (EOC) tests. Whatever your student's needs, Varsity Tutors will find a talented phonics tutor in Redmond who will make those needs a number one priority.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Redmond, WA Phonics tutoring
During today's session, the student and I spent approximately the first twenty minutes reviewing some of the alphabet and letter-writing. The remainder of the session was spent reading books we picked out off the library shelves, including a Star Wars book and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I was extremely pleased at the student's patience and progress in reading. He has his workbooks to practice with prior to our next session if he chooses, although with today's progress in reading I believe I will focus our next session on reading comprehension as well.

We worked on putting letters in alphabetical order, matching letter sounds to letters, upper and lower case matching, and putting the missing letter in a row of letters. I read her A Great Day for Up and had her recognize and read the word "up" every time it came up in the story. We ended the session by reading a story about sharing, Blackberry Mouse.

Today the student and I completed a project for school and then read two books. She had to do a community service project, so we decided to donate some of her toys. Her dad said he would help her with actually sorting through her toys, so we just wrote down what she was going to do, such as organizing and cleaning her toys. Then, we read 2 books.

Things seemed to go very well with the student this evening -- he said "this was great!" several times on my way out, so I'll take that as a good sign. We worked on his reading "book club" assignment, which focused on isolating key passages from a book he had read and answering questions about them which will be part of a class discussion. He had many ideas, so I helped him to rein in the specifics and target succinct answers rather than responding with run-ons. That said, I made sure that he was still primarily responsible for the work, so he was the typist, and answers were ultimately phrased in his own voice.

The student and I worked on a variety of math and literacy topics. We modeled some simple addition problems with manipulatives to practice the idea of "counting on." We practiced some subtraction problems as well, which were a little harder for her to conceptualize. She was able to model real-life subtraction situations with me, but would still claim that the answer was the same as it would have been for a related addition equation. We can continue to practice subtraction in future sessions since it is conceptually challenging. We did a final culminating activity to practice the sight words she has been working on. The student did very well on all the words. The only one she still struggles to recognize is "they," which is a difficult one. Then, we practiced decoding words in two simple books together.
