Session Summaries by Middle School Math Tutors

Redmond, WA Middle School Math tutoring
The student and I continued to look at derivatives and their application to limits and related rates. He practiced with problems he had for homework. He continues to have trouble focusing at times. He is capable at doing multiple steps in his head, but will often then become lost and forget where he was in the problem. We will continue to look at strategies for breaking the problems up into manageable steps.

We went over some homework she had for break. First we went over L'Hopital's rule. I think she has that down very well. We went over a few more questions that were supposed to be an introduction to integrals. So I gave her a small crash course in anti-derivatives and integrals. So hopefully when they get taught to her in a couple of weeks the student will have a head start. Next, we will spend some time on optimization problems.

Redmond, WA Middle School Math tutoring
Student 1 had a homework sheet which required applying the distributive property, working in all operations with negative numbers, and combining like terms. She worked on about 2/3 of this. We then discussed the linear equation/slope-intercept equation, as her class is starting chapter 4 with this. The student practiced finding the slope 3 different ways: via input/output charts, between points on a graph, and by the MAT Method. Student 2 has a writing assignment. She read through a good portion of the reading material, took notes, and was able to verbalize back to me her comprehension of the reading. A lot of mature vocabulary and concepts to take in and digest there.

The first student and I worked on piece-wise functions. She had a pretty good grasp on it, but I did realize that she was not comfortable graphing a function from slope intercept form. I told her that next week, we would work on slope intercept form more. She gets easily discouraged when she doesn't immediately understand a concept. The second student and I worked on finding the degree of a polynomial. Once he understood that, we went a little ahead of where he is in class to work on multiplying polynomials and a little factoring. He has very little difficulty. Their parents told me after the session that they would like me to test them to get an idea of where they are in terms of keeping up with the class. I plan on using diagnostic tests next week.
