Redmond, WA English tutoring
The student and I played a game today which consisted of several different vocabulary words using Christmas and holiday concepts. Since he has gotten so much better at his Round One and Round Two words, I am incorporating advanced words for him to start to work on. Before playing the games, we read a book about mummies. I figured the topic would interest him. Next week we will resume our usual mixture of reading/pronunciation/writing.

We discussed close reading and speed reading, and when to use each approach. We also talked about vocalization, and giving voice to the characters, including the narrator, while reading. Then we practiced by reading John Steinbeck's, "How Mr. Hogan Robbed A Bank," aloud. I asked the student to practice close reading by using his finger to point to every word as he read, to help him better track the words and keep his speech and his eye aligned. We ended the session with a poetry writing exercise from Shel Silverstein's, "Shelebration."

During our first session, the student and I started out with getting to know each other and I was able to find out details about her as a student- who her teacher is, what languages she speaks, what her favorite parts of school are, spelling techniques she has learned, etc. We then took a look at a writer's workshop assignment she had completed, and practiced sounding out words-- to practice sounding out words and trying to catch all the audible letters in the word. We finished our session by reading a book together. She is very bright and very good at expressing herself, and I look forward to working with her!

Today we covered the homework that the student had for school. We studied for a homophones test he will have in school, which is nice because we have been covering that exact subject together. For that reason he knew most of them and I felt comfortable with how it went. We then spent some time grading the math homework I had given him.
