Today we went over the student's homework. Her teacher had not covered adding and subtracting polynomials in class yet, so we looked over the examples in the book. After learning the terms, the student was able to identify the leading coefficient and the degree of polynomials with no problems. She also didn't have any difficulties adding polynomial expressions together.

The student and I met because she has a test or quiz on Monday over some of the new material that her teacher covered. The student understands the simpler types of the FOIL method. I had her work on some of the homework assigned for the topic so that she could get some practice in before her quiz/test on the material. She seemed more confident.

For 1/26, the student and I covered linear equations, covering slope-intercept form and how to get an equation into slope-intercept form. We also covered material she would see in the coming week. For 2/2, we covered all the material that she had missed, so she had a solid idea of what was necessary to solve each problem. We covered solving systems of equations using both substitution and elimination as well as simplifying exponential and polynomial problems. For next week we will continue to cover all material she needs as well as preparation for future material or review of past material.

The student went through another miscellaneous homework assignment similar in format to the previous ones. Because she has seen so many like this, she went through it quickly. Then we worked on a redo over solving simultaneous equations. She did very well on the elimination section. Then we did a "coin problem", which was in essence a simplified 3 equations, 3 variables problem. This was more involved, so I went through the problem thoroughly with her. She also showed me one of her quizzes from last week, which was the one that she did over graphing simultaneous equations. We went through the quiz together, and I was pleased with her progress from the last worksheet.

The student obtained his Algebra 1 review book today, so we began reviewing for his Algebra I placement test. We covered chapters 1-5 today, and I assigned him some selected problems from chapter 4 test and chapter 5 test. I believe these problems will help him review for the materials reviewed today. He should also continue to preview for Algebra II and ask me any questions he may have for Algebra II.

The student worked on solving equations with one variable. She did a variety of problems ranging from simple expressions with the variable on one side through more complex examples with the variables on both sides of the equations and problems in which distribution had to be performed before solving the equations. For next time, the student is to work on solving equations with one variable.
