Reading Tutoring review by Catie in San Diego, CA
Today I started with a colorful worksheet on the letter Y because we still seem to be having trouble with that letter in particular. We then played a fun game of matching. When he picked up each letter he had to say the name of the letter as well as the sound that it makes. Whoever got the most matches at the end won. We then read a dot book and he did so well at reading it without my reading it to him first. He sounded the words out and was able to get everything. We ended by showing his mom his progress made in reading by having him read that book to her.

Reading Tutoring review by Sherry in San Diego, CA
The student discussed his reading so far in "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry". We discussed main points of Chapter 5-7. He will finish reading the book by Friday and have a rough draft of his book report for us to review on Friday. He also worked on math -- addition, subtraction and multiplication. We had a game for points seeing who could complete with the most accuracy first. We completed 1 page of 35 problems in our drill. He also worked 2 pages of word problems. He was not assigned any homework other than finishing the book and preparing a rough draft of his book report. As the report is due next week when school starts, this task will take all of his time between now and when he starts school next Tuesday.

Reading Tutoring review by Kylie in San Diego, CA
During this lesson, the student and I resumed our normal schedule. We spent the first half of the lesson working on reading comprehension exercises from an activity book provided by his mother. He is performing well on these, but sometimes makes simple mistakes because he rushes and does not fully read the directions. We spent the last part of class reading a nonfiction book: Bugs that Kill. I'm encouraging him to follow along with his finger as he reads; this helps him slow down.

Reading Tutoring review by David in San Diego, CA
The student and I completed an academic intake interview wherein his strengths and weaknesses were identified. After that, we completed a literacy tour of his house. At the end, the student's fluency, accuracy, comprehension, written expression, and decoding capabilities were tested with a variety of grade level texts. The last few minutes of our session were used to teach him the power of reading for accuracy instead of for speed.

Reading Tutoring review by Julie in San Diego, CA
Today was our first session and I wanted to get a feel for the student's level and ability. I had her read three leveled readers from the website Reading A-Z. I gave her a few comprehension and decoding strategies to use while reading, such as doing a picture walk, and looking at smaller words inside bigger words. She also read a few books that she checked out from the library. We found that using her finger to point to each word as she read helped improve her fluency. We also spoke about how reading the same book several times will help to gain fluency and word recognition abilities.

I brought the student a level 1 book and we read and acted out the book. He did amazing! We then worked on two workbook pages over the short "i" and the short "o" sounds.
