Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Matthew in Quincy, MA
In today's session, student and I spent the first 10-15 minutes working in his alphabet workbook, during which time we practiced recognizing and correctly pronouncing particular syllables in words and writing out the first few letters of the alphabet. The remainder of the session was spent working on his homework for this week, which was focused on reading and answering questions about a poem (specifically, about words and syllables in the poem). I did not see any grades or scores to indicate progress in his class, but based on his performance today I observed some improvement in terms of his recognition of certain words and syllables. He did not seem to struggle with anything in particular today. While we finished his assignment, I would like to review a few of the words in the poem during our next session, and he can always review it on his own until that time.

We went over the alphabet. Letters s,b,t (upper and lowercase) The difference between writing "b" and "d" (lowercase) She is still having some trouble with the alphabet, skipping "s,t,u,v" and once saying "l,m,n,o,p" instead of "x,y,z." I think practicing the alphabet in order with a variety of methods (books, singing, videos) at different paces will be very helpful.

I did a sight word review with the student to make sure that she was understanding the previous lessons. I had her read through last week's book and she did very well and we introduced a new book in a series as a preview of Thursday's lesson.

Reading Tutoring review by Ali in Quincy, MA
The student and I split our time today between reading and math. We counted past 100 and also learned about greater than and less than numbers. He learned what the word "dash" meant and proceeded to "dash to my room to get the pencil" and "dash to the bathroom." He must have said it 5 times - adorable! We will continue to split our time between reading and math since he is already strong in reading and seems receptive to more varied activities.

In this evening's session, the student was assisted with test preparation related to an upcoming assessment on the book, The Thing About Georgie. Previously recorded responses to study questions from Chapters 1 - 5 were reviewed and discussed against or with evidence from the reading. Vocabulary for chapters 4 and 5 were also reviewed. Additionally, a suggested study plan was discussed to assist her with the remainder of her study preparation.
