How can a Reading tutor help you?

A major part of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) is reading. Whether your child is in elementary school or high school, reading ability is constantly being evaluated and tested. If your child is struggling with reading fluency or comprehension, you need help from a tutor. At Varsity Tutors, we could help you make a difference in your child's academic future. Our educational directors can help you locate an independent tutor in Peabody who is skilled at helping students prepare for reading.

Early readers need to quickly identify phonemic awareness and sequencing. Young children who have begun reading will be assessed on predictions, story mapping, and decoding. Advanced readers should be comfortable with idioms, blends, and comprehension. If your child is finding studying for a reading course overwhelming, let us find you a talented tutor in Peabody who could make the process easier. Falling behind in reading will only cause problems in more advanced grades. Reading comes naturally to some children, but others have to work at it. That's how a tutor could help.

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Kathy in Peabody, MA
The student and I had our final session. We reviewed her homework from Success Principles for Teens, and then we made lists: one for 10 tips to rhetorically read and the other 10 ways to read more. I had her sign up for Word a Day and encouraged her to read that email each day to build her vocabulary.

We covered the case study portion of the exam. Together we analyzed the data given on a sample case study and the student created a graphic organizer to organize his thoughts for the essay. He will be taking his exam Wednesday, and I think he is well prepared.

Reading Tutoring review by Aaron in Peabody, MA
This is the student's first week of school so she had her own school subjects that I helped her with. The first thing we did was read through a couple pages of science that covered the layers of earth (crust, lithosphere, mantle, and core). Then we got into some math, which dealt with writing numbers in different forms: standard form, word form, short form, and expanded form. The student did extremely well with the math portion! From there we moved onto the final chapter of 'A Wrinkle in Time'. The student did a wonderful job in re-telling the important parts of the final chapter. I asked her a few questions as well. We also read together the final four pages of the book. Job well done by the student during this session.

Reading Tutoring review by Angela in Peabody, MA
Read aloud from Stuart Little. I reviewed all the sound combinations we have been learning which are on index cards. I taught him from a phonics book long and short i, o, and u sounds. Then we read words with these sounds and then read full sentences. Last we worked on 4 pages from his own workbook which covered learning about the table of contents.

Reading Tutoring review by Tamara in Peabody, MA
I assessed the student on letter identification since it has been a while since I last saw him. We also worked on phonics. He did an alphabetical order activity. He continues to work on identifying 10 letters such as b, y, r, t, j, g, h, u, p, and q. We also worked on reading. He used pictures to give clues to what he was reading. He also practiced handwriting. We also did some math exercises. He worked on a worksheet where he had to count and identify numbers.

Reading Tutoring review by Jesse in Peabody, MA
The student has a college application due very soon, so we focused on the essays that he has to finish. We put a lot of effort into his personal statement, as that is a crucial part of the application and he still had some work to do on it. We put together a couple pages of notes that he can work off of, and I think he has a good essay as long as he buckles down. We also took a look at his algebra II homework, which dealt with parabolas and different forms a parabola equation can take. I think he is starting to understand the material better, so hopefully it pays off in class.
