We started the session with the student reading "Frog and Toad," and together we read the entire story. He is progressing with his fluency. We then did two workbook pages to practice his writing. We also incorporated his stuffed animals into a writing exercise. He was much more engaged, and it seemed he had a purpose.

The student and I met for an hour and a half. I could tell this longer session was a challenge for the student, but he did so well! I was impressed with his ability to focus and persevere through the session. It's amazing the improvement I have seen with his reading. I am hoping that, after this week, we will be able to move on to more-challenging books. His homework was to write five sentences about his day trip with his dad on Tuesday and write out his spelling words, 10 times each, in neat handwriting.

Today we began reading the first Magic Tree House book. We focused on making predictions from the text and character actions/thoughts. I read one chapter to model, the student read the next, and then we choral read the third. She reads with great voice but is still working on slowing down and sounding out each syllable in a word. After reading 3 chapters, we switched over to the nonfiction companion of the fiction book and read facts about dinosaurs, focusing on nonfiction aspects to books.

Today we worked on long and short vowels. We began by looking at the vowels and talking about different sounds they made. We wrote words on a sheet of paper and talked about which vowels were short and which were long. Then we looked at some workbook pages for different short vowels, in which you colored the picture if the vowel was short. The student picked up on this right away and was doing really well. So we'll keep working on the vowels. She seems to get it and will probably just need some time in future sessions to revisit it, which we will do.

Yesterday we worked on reviewing sight words and on vowels and the many sounds they make. He learned to use the saying "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking", which I have already seen him use and has helped his ability to read words like 'read' and 'mean'. Today he read a page of a book and was able to read a lot more on his own. We talked about rhyming words and words that contain the vowel "e". I also taught him a game in which he makes up words from scrabble letters.
