How can a Reading tutor help you?

Varsity Tutors' educational directors are experienced at helping students in Lynn, MA, find independent reading tutors. Reading skill development is important for your child and should start early. Developing a connection between the letters and sounds they most often make is the first step in being able to sound out the word. As the process of sounding out a word becomes more habitual your child could begin to understand what they are reading. These are two of five primary skills that your child could learn quickly in a one-on-one tutoring session. An expert tutor can walk your child through the necessary steps to achieve excellent reading comprehension.

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Galen in Lynn, MA
The student and I had an excellent session this morning. We discussed the main ideas from the Jackie Robinson selection, the student skimmed the selection to refresh his memory and review main ideas. After reviewing all of our test taking skills, the student answered 10 questions without the aid of the selection. We checked and he corrected answers twice before getting them all correct. I surmised that one weakness for the student is vocabulary. Therefore, for the next few sessions we will emphasize vocabulary mastery, especially using context clues. Again, this was an excellent session. He worked hard today and he has a great work ethic. He is striving to become a better all-around student.

Had a good session with the student today. She is improving at understanding story guides and figurative language. She is still guessing at sounding out words. I will do some reinforcing on that in the next lesson.

Today we went over the Short Answer questions to the passages from the previous day. Student 1 really seems to be getting a grasp of how to answer the questions independently with the response format. I worked with Student 2 on grammar issues in his responses.

Reading Tutoring review by Faeeza in Lynn, MA
The student went over his poetry assignments, especially the latest limerick he had written. He is still having some trouble with punctuation. His organizational skills are improving and he seems to be coming around to the idea of creating a vocabulary list while he reads. The goal is to get him to keep his binder organized so he doesn't lose assignments/doesn't turn in assignments late. He has a knack for remembering details from the books he reads.

Today, the student and I worked on the vowel diphthongs au, aw, oi, ou, and oy. After practicing with vowel diphthongs we worked on a reading comprehension package on Siberian tigers. This passage is a Level J, which is currently the student's independent reading level. After completing the comprehension questions we worked on practicing the OAA reading and math sections.
