We reviewed a writing rubric given from the school. I will be using that to "grade" the student's writing from now on so he learns to write using that rubric. He had homework to work on today. We read a short story. The students were assigned to determine repetitive phrases and events. We reviewed other famous stories like, "The Three Little Pigs" and "Goldilocks". With these stories, he was able to determine repetition easily.

The student was very focused today. Since he didn't have any school on Monday, we worked through a few sample tests for reading. The student did very well answering questions involving reading comprehension and was already exhibiting good test taking skills. We also worked through a few math problems. While working with him he seemed to gain more of an understanding of the concepts that we covered.

Student B: We worked on her writing and math homework. She did well with applying the correct strategies for math.

Reading was the focus for this session. We read various fiction books and continued to focus on self monitoring and comprehension. After reading a book, we discussed the characters by first naming a trait, and then giving evidence from the text to support that trait. We also worked on retelling to only include details that are important or fit in with the main idea of the text. I noticed that the student independently self corrected more errors that she made while reading during this session in comparison to our last session. We will continue to work on these comprehension and self monitoring skills in our next session. I left some materials for her to practice with until then.
