Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

We've helped thousands of learners of all ages improve their reading and English skills including teaching English as a second language.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Wonderful session. So proud of the student's progress. We went over a new format for the Social Studies outlining, and he seems to be grasping it quite well. The Greek Culture web turned out great, and we're working on the study guide for the upcoming test. Homework was to finish the outline, so I look forward to seeing how that went.

The student and I continued discussing his assessment preparation workbook. He completed a short story from Practice set 2, and also completed an entry in his journal. We reviewed the punctuation section on the Paradigm Online Writing Assistant website and asked him to review how to use the colon. Over the weekend he is also assigned two journal entries for free writing.

We spent this session progressing through assigned English vocabulary workbook pages. In the assigned pages (a single chapter), the student was responsible for the definitions and usages of 20 different vocabulary words in various different applications: sentence completion, synonym association, antonym association, and multiple choice definition selection. He struggled most with the sentence completion portion of these exercises. We discussed several approaches to vocabulary assignments of this nature such as preparatory flash cards (i.e. creating and studying flashcards with term/definition prior to actually completing the workbook exercises) and using the process of elimination in expediting word choice. We will continue practicing these methods in future vocabulary assignments.

Reading Tutoring review by Jacquelyn in Federal Way, WA
This session was solely for preparing the student for the assessment exam. We read several passages - fiction, informational, and poetry - and answered all of the questions. The student implemented my tip on going back and reading to help narrow down the choices to find the correct answer, and I taught her a few more: how to simplify the questions asked so she can understand what she's supposed to be answering, how to find the "goof" answers by asking: "Did this happen in the story?,'" and how to identify the trick question that "wants you to think it's right" by finding the one word that will never match up to what the question is asking. I helped her navigate through this thought process, but she did the work on her own and did it very well.

The student is getting the hang of sounding words out and recognizing patterns in words (she remembered "fight" was "night" with an "f" or she was able to understand "indeed" based on the two compounded words within the word). I'm proud of the progress she has made.

Reading Tutoring review by Megan in Federal Way, WA
The student and I started with some math games to improve her addition. We then went onto reading, working with one of her "bedtime" books to see how she did with more difficult reading material. She knew most of the words, and was able to sound out all but a couple. I took notes on things we needed to work on. We then went through a couple of word lists and I gave her a little quiz.
