Reading Tutoring review by Jennifer in Atlanta, GA
Today we worked on the student's homework. He needed to read a Harcourt story from school. The story was titled, Abuela. We focused on fluency, pronunciation, comprehension, and using context clues to understand new words. Afterwards, the student orally answered comprehension questions and was able to retell the story. We then completed two MAD LIB stories, identifying nouns, adjectives, verbs and other parts of speech. The student enjoys creating these stories very much.

We reviewed words missed. The student read with 100% accuracy. He read complete list, but missed 7 words. Did fluency check on easycbm.com, 2-4. Read 52 words per minute. He always does much better with a second reading--79 words per minute. Read words from "Let's Read", practicing /ee/ and /ea/ words. Spelled words and sentences from dictation.

We read a bunch of pages of "The Enormous Crocodile," as in twice as many as he was supposed to. I think getting the homework done right away and then focusing on reading might be better.

Reading Tutoring review by Serena in Atlanta, GA
The student's ability to ask questions is improving greatly. This week we worked on some of her homework assignments for the first time together in order for me to get an indication as to what her workload is like. After, we read a longer children's story together and periodically, I asked her to make predictions regarding the story and its characters. We used the 5 Ws and open ended questions to get her thinking about the possibilities within the story and to spark her curiosity a bit more. The first time I presented the idea of predictions she grasped it very well. Unfortunately, we ran out of time but we will be continuing from that point next week. I look forward to her progress and am encouraged at the success I am already seeing.

Reading Tutoring review by Richard in Atlanta, GA
First session with the student. It went well, and the student and I were able to stay on task for the whole hour session. We went through a Reading Level Assessment, the student was able to identify words. We went through common word endings, starting with beginning ones (c-ar, b-at, b-oo) until we got to some the student struggled with. For these we made word cards and I quizzed the student on them. With some repetition, he'll master this differentiation. Next, he did some reading and I had a chance to evaluate his reading in context. I had him focus on the illustration and see if matching words were in the text. Look forward to working with him next week!
