Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued to practice area problems involving fractions in order to better prepare for her tests during the week. We worked with factors of numbers as well to encourage the process of long division. She was able to successfully write lists of factors by the end of the session. She is hesitant to work with the fractions, but is gaining confidence through her understanding."
"The student and I covered decimals and how to write out the numbers. We also covered ordering numbers, whole numbers and decimals. In ordering, we also went over ordering of numbers with different places (tenths, hundredths, and thousandths). We reviewed the identity property of addition and subtraction, and Roman numerals. These are concepts that he will be going over in class in the near future. He worked hard on these concepts, and was open to being corrected. He was also encouraged to mark any problems that he had difficulty with during the week, so that we could review them at the next session. He continues to want to understand and do well. This continues to be a great win in working with him."
"The student and I covered how to write numbers in expanded form as well as word form. He's a very smart kid, so he picked it up pretty quickly. I left him with about 6 pages of math to do."
"The student and I covered place value as well as reading and comparing decimals up to the ten-thousandths place. He was struggling the most with recognizing that a zero to right side of the decimal point is merely a placeholder, thus numbers that appear to be different at first glance are actually equal (e.g., .07 = .070). His attitude toward the material that was covered was positive, and he asked relevant questions when I gave him strategies for identifying the place value of a number. For extra practice I gave him 4 additional problems to check his understanding, and I instructed him to review the notes and examples from our session. I did not get to see any scores/grades to note his progress, but his father informed me that his last test scores exceeded the standard for his grade level. There were no real concerns from this session, but 1 big win was the fact that he took the initiative to check the reasonableness of his answers without any direction from me."
"The student and I covered the following topics: spelling, long division, multiple part word problems, and grammar. She was able to finish her math homework with ease. We also completed the student's spelling homework, which she did with ease. After, we reviewed the student's grammar review sheet and went over pronouns, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs to prepare for her upcoming test."
"The student and I covered two-digit long division in this session. He needed help with understanding the concept at first -- specifically, going through each step and staying organized when writing the long division problems. The session ended with him improving from when it started. We also studied times tables for a quiz on Friday, which he knows very well."
