First, we reviewed the student's homework essay. She wrote to an SAT prompt in the test prep book: "Is Ignorance Bliss?" She had adhered to the 25-minute time limit and had produced quite a good essay. On the SAT rubric, it fell around a "5" score. The essay was balanced, articulate, had some excellent word usage, and had only a few extremely minor conventions errors. It was not at "6" level, because it addressed the topic in a somewhat limited fashion, it needed better transitions, and the conclusion was abrupt and not sufficiently tied to her thesis. Next, we corrected exercises she had done in the test prep guide, reviewing any items she'd missed. In addition, we critiqued several essays she'd written for her AP class. Overall, they were well done. She'd received a 6+ on one and a 6 on the other, on a 9-point rubric her instructor uses. (The instructor had only assigned the grade; there were no comments.) We deduced that many of the reasons she didn't get higher grades on these were the same as what I'd found in her SAT prompt essay. We will continue to work on the essay writing, because she wants to get scores in the higher ranges. Last, we selected our next session dates and agreed on homework assignments. Our next session is 11/16.

In this session, we initially focused on the trickier grammar rules for writing (faulty comparisons, misplaced modifiers, idioms, and others) and practiced several sets of improving sentences and error identifications. The student did well with these and would just benefit from reviewing through the latter-end problems in the practice sections. For reading, she also did well, working to point to direct contextual support for her answer choices. Going forward, she should continue to review the vocabulary list and practice long-passage sections to build up her endurance for the test. We left off with math, where we continued to practice the general strategies. I'm having her go through the 50 math tips PDF that I've sent her and to practice as many math problems as she can on her own. She should spend at the very minimum 30 minutes every day working on a practice section.

In today's session, the student and I reviewed his response to the second sample essay prompt, analyzing his annotations, identification of features, and discussion of the author's use of these features to build and sustain an argument. I've advised him to revise this first draft prior to our next meeting, prioritizing his clear identification of features and objective analysis of how these are used to support and further a claim. In the second half of our session, he and I reviewed the reading comprehension question types discussed so far (global, command-of-evidence, and vocab-in-context questions) and addressed connections questions. We then worked through some sample passages and questions. I've also suggested that he complete one full reading comprehension section prior to our Friday session.

In today's session, we focused primarily on chemical equations and stoichiometry. This included molar mass, balancing chemical equations, limiting reactants, ions, isotopes, and empirical/ molecular formulas. I gave the student practice problems that cover all of these topics for her to do before we meet again on Wednesday. During our next session, we are going to get into redox reactions and electrochemistry.

In today's session, we reviewed the Reading and Writing questions that the student missed on a full-length practice SAT. Today was an awesome session. She performed really well on the test as a whole, and it seems that a lot of her mistakes were relatively small ones that she caught quickly upon second examination. She is excellent at finding important passage info, and we discussed the possibility of her "reverse engineering" answers to general questions by identifying the relevant sentences and boiling down their meaning. We will continue to work on such questions moving forward, as she will be completing two sections for each of our next few sessions.
