Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Our session began by creating flash cards from the Upper Level ISEE vocabulary list. We completed 20 a-words and studied them directly afterwards. The remainder of our session was devoted to Upper Level Mathematics, and we covered practice drills ranging from adding/subtracting negative numbers, multiplying/dividing negative numbers, fractions and improper fractions, and PEMDAS and the Order of Operations. She is a very bright student with a high level of mental acuity. She is an avid reader and very quick-witted. I enjoyed our first session! For extra practice, I have sent her one Upper Level Verbal and one Upper Level Math practice test."
"Tonight I met the student and got up to speed on his test prep. We spent the majority of our time this session working through strategy and practice problems for vocabulary. He is making flashcards to build on his vocab. He is solid in math. We will continue with practice implementing test taking strategy next session."
"We went over general information about the test and practiced questions from each section to get a sense of where the students are. They are both extremely capable so we just need to focus on pacing and fine-tuning."
"The student and I spent some time getting him acquainted with the SHSAT, which he will also be taking -- he proved adept at the "Scrambled Paragraph" section of the verbal, which asks students to put 6 sentences in logical order. We also looked at the Logical Reasoning questions as well as the math section, which is essentially the same as ISEE/SSAT math in terms of level and style. We finished by looking at some new vocabulary -- I encouraged him to work a bit every day on vocab and find different ways to study the words, emphasizing the need to understand the context/connotations and not just the definitions. He will also do a Reading and a Verbal section in his new prep book for next week."
"Today, the student and I finished going through the exponents section and looking at subtracting and multiplying exponents. She feels more comfortable with those concepts, but we will definitely need to revisit them in future sessions. We then moved on to circle concepts, including determining the radius, circumference, and area of circles."
"Today, the students and I worked on vocabulary, where I showed them the strategy of creating context to answer synonym questions. We also worked on the math section, specifically plugging in for variables."
