Today I asked the student what she thought of our lessons to date and what she would like to see changed or remain the same. She said she wanted more writing assignments so she could improve her grammar and increase her vocabulary. I decided to launch right into one with her. I asked her about any TV shows or movies she's seen lately, and she mentioned The Walking Dead at first but ended up saying it was too complicated to recount to me. Instead, she chose to write about The Martian with Matt Damon. We began with the 5 w's (who, what, when, where, why, and how) and then immediately started writing the movie summary. We kept it simple - just a retelling of the story's events. We chose to write in past tense and then played with some synonyms as we wrote, to avoid repetition. She also learned some new vocabulary in the process!

Today the student and I prepared for his next English class by discussing and analyzing the essay he was required to read -- Tragedy and the Common Man by Arthur Miller. We made sure he understood this article so that he felt well prepared for class. We also started to write an outline for his research paper. Finally we went over the steps for writing an expository essay. I like that he asks to know about topics beyond what he is currently working on. He does this to improve his understanding so that he can do well on in-class assignments. He is becoming more organized and working hard to plan ahead.

The student completed another assigned essay, this one a compare-and-contrast exercise based on the TV programs "Sherlock" and "Doctor Who." Once again, she developed her paragraphs well and built sentences of varied structure with good word choice and a sense of humor. Mechanical errors were minimal. We spent part of today's session on a vocabulary-building exercise involving pairs of synonyms. She constructed two related sentences (a kind of mini-story) using one of the synonyms in each sentence. She caught on to the program quickly, and we applied it immediately in beginning development of another essay, this one a description of a photograph. She'll continue working on this essay until we meet again next Monday.

The student has a presentation on Aquinas, so we reviewed that section first and discussed the aspects of his argument and wording with which she was having problems. We also had a general discussion about Aquinas' life and influences. We then went back and looked through the other sections of Aquinas that she had to read and looked through problem passages.
