How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?
The Secondary School Admission Test, or SSAT, is used as part of the admissions process for private junior high and senior high schools. This test is administered in grades 3-11, and there are three separate levels: Elementary (grades 3-4), Middle (grades 5-7), and Upper (grades 8-11). Each level has a slightly different exam. The Elementary SSAT has a total of 89 questions, including 30 math questions, 30 verbal questions, 28 reading comprehension questions, and a single writing prompt; this test has 1 hour 50 minutes allotted for students to complete it, including a 15-minute break. The Middle Level SSAT has a total of 167 questions, of which 150 are scored. They are as follows: an unscored writing sample; 50 quantitative questions, 40 reading comprehension questions, 60 verbal questions, and 16 experimental questions. Your child may have 3 hours and 5 minutes to complete the exam, including 15 minutes in breaks. The Upper Level SSAT includes 167 questions, of which only 150 are scored. This includes an unscored writing sample, 50 quantitative questions, 40 reading comprehension questions, 60 verbal questions, and 16 experimental questions.
