Racine, WI Physiology tutoring
Today we worked through a practice mechanics exam the student had. He just needed practice applying the concepts he already knew to multiple-choice questions. He shared that he has not done harmonic motion/ springs, so I told him I would bring some additional practice on that to our next session. I left him with a worksheet for Kirchhoff's laws to review the concepts we worked on last week. He continues to have a great attitude.

Today the student and I worked on converting between different measurements for gases. We also did some problems with manometers. He seemed to have a very good understanding of the material prior to the session; he did not require much help. Since he finished his homework quickly, I introduced the most likely next topic to him, the ideal gas laws. We worked through several problems to help him get ahead for this week. He did very well with the extra practice problems.

The student and I had a good session. He has a test this Tuesday on thermodynamics. We spent our time reviewing the vocabulary and concepts of this unit. We also worked through about ten practice problems dealing with calculating heat transfer of temperature changes and phase changes. I think in general, he has made a lot of progress in his understanding of chemistry. He is getting the material a lot quicker, and the organization of his work is starting to come together nicely. He informed me that on his previous test in chemistry on the unit of gas laws, he received a 92.5%. This is a remarkable improvement from his previous test scores. Our next session is scheduled for Sunday.

Today the student and I covered action potentials and the Hodgkin-Huxley voltage clamp experiment. An overview of the stages of an action potential was included, as well as some simple block diagrams illustrating how the normal interplay of ion concentrations and ion channel behavior influence a membrane potential, and how a voltage clamp takes away the influence of ion concentrations due to the external maintenance of a constant potential.

We continued to discuss limiting reagent problems and covered the theory. We reviewed molar ratios and calculating molar masses in preparation for solving these problems. I gave the student some homework questions on mole-to-mass conversions and limiting reagent questions for her to try.
