We went over her lab about absorption and radiation. We also reviewed and went over the life span of stars, energy transfers, conduction, convection, reflection, refraction, the characteristics of waves. This week we covered topics from the chapter over reaction rates. We discussed using concentration of reactants to determine the rate constant as well as the rate of reaction. We looked at first-order zero order and second order reactions and how one can evaluate their rate. We will meet again once more material has been assigned over this topic. We also examined the role of catalysts and the way in which they can increase the reaction rate.

Today we began our review for the student's exam on heat of reaction, Hess' law, and potential energy diagrams. We discussed the theory of change of state problems (indicating that enthalpy is a state function and what implications that has on being able to calculate heat regardless of path taken). He has some work to do in being able to understand all of the transitions that are occurring as a substance (water in our example) is changing from a solid to liquid to gas. To help, I reviewed the full diagram, explaining each step in the transition and its theory. We also discussed Hess' Law and how that fits into the previous concept of enthalpy being a state function. Lastly, we covered potential energy diagrams (labeling the diagram), explaining concepts such as catalysts in terms of the diagram and ending with a discussion of heat of reaction explaining that all elements have heats of reactions of zero and why.

We went over several free-response questions from past AP exams. It was very helpful as it acted as a review for the student. We were able to focus on electricity and magnetism. He needs to work on understanding the electricity and magnetism equations, specifically which apply to point charges and which apply to two charged plates. He has a good attitude and is eager to learn. I left him with some extra AP problems to work on that will help him to review more topics before he takes the AP test.
