Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We finished up working on the writing section questions first. The student also gave me two essays to be scored. We then talked about what areas she felt weak in, which led us to working on more of the math section. We worked through some box answer questions as well as a few multiple-choice. She is doing really well, especially at using the tools and strategies I have provided for her. Her homework assignment is to finish three different math sections, which we will check at our next meeting."
"This was my first session with the student and it went fairly well. I got a feel for his previous experience with the ACT and where his weaknesses are. Our focus will primarily be on English and Reading, with some review on the other sections of the exam. We will also do a little on how to approach the Science section. I think he has a strong grasp of English grammar, so we will focus on the types of questions the ACT asks and practice approaching them so looking for certain grammatical concepts will become habitual."
"Today was all geometry work. She had a quiz on area and perimeter that she wanted to review with me, so we worked through that. The problem isn't the concepts themselves, the problem is the time consuming step by step work. She did pretty well though. She also had a worksheet on how to find areas of shaded regions using circumscribed and inscribed polygons and circles. She did very well on that."
"The student made a great start during our first session. He has previously taken the SAT and ACT, and is very familiar with many of the concepts we covered. My main focus for the future will be helping him get more practice with specific types of questions he finds challenging, especially the harder math problems and the advanced critical reading passages. Before the end of this session I had him outline a response to one of the more vague SAT essay questions. I feel that essay outlining and writing skills should be a main focus of at least one future session."
"1 hour session. We looked through one of the student's previous programs that he struggled with and I explained what the code was doing line by line. He was struggling with syntax and keeping track of variables, but understood what most of the control structures and conditionals were doing. I have high hopes that we will be able to catch him up with the class."
"We worked on class vocabulary and supplementary reading. The student is doing a great job and persevering. Next week, we will continue in the same way."
