How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

If your child is in their second or third year of high school, they might find themselves getting ready for the PSAT, also known as the Preliminary SAT. This test is given to students in an effort to get them ready for the SAT. It is usually held in the fall, often in the month of October. This test focuses on mathematics, as well as reading and writing. If your child feels they need help in any of these subjects (for example, they have a weakness when it comes to writing essays), or if they would simply like to feel more confident before taking the test, then let Varsity Tutors help. Our educational directors can help you and your child connect with PSAT tutoring in Round Rock, TX.

Your child's tutor can work with their unique needs, only teaching your child what is most important to them. For example, if your child would rather focus on math only during their tutoring sessions, their tutor can arrange that. If your child would rather have more help explaining what to expect on the test, and the best test-taking practices used to prepare, that is possible as well. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors could help your child find Round Rock tutors to create a study plan to help them do well with the PSAT exam. Your child's tutor could take their needs into account, as they work with you and your child to make sure they are ready for exam day.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Nora in Round Rock, TX
The student has strong math skills but she wanted to work on shortcuts and test-taking strategies. She also wanted to review a couple of skills that she felt were rusty. She was delighted by some of the shortcuts that reduced the amount of work she had to do to find a correct answer. She found geometry and sequences the most challenging but quickly picked up the skills again as we reviewed them.

PSAT Tutoring review by Heather in Round Rock, TX
The student and I first went over her HW, which was much improved in both CR and writing. I reiterated "bad" answer choices for CR and then I timed her on a reading section. She did well using POE. Then I timed her on a writing section. She slipped a bit on this, not remembering grammar rules. But, after review, she finished strong with the ten minute writing section and a perfect score.

PSAT Tutoring review by Frederick in Round Rock, TX
The student and I had our first session today. We started by going over all of the most important general SAT strategies, like eliminating answer choices. He wants to focus on math for now to get more comfortable with the material, so our whole session afterwards was focused on that. We got through the first two chapters of the SAT test prep book - basic arithmetic and algebra and functions. He really had no issues with any of the stuff we went over. He thinks he will need a little more work with the next sections, particularly geometry and probability. Overall, it was a great, relaxed first session for us to get to know each other.

PSAT Tutoring review by Gwendolen in Round Rock, TX
The student and I almost finished the grammar review together, worked on practice questions, and started a full-length section. He did a great job on the practice exam, working slowly, and using the techniques I wrote on his exam pages. He really understood what he did right and wrong and we discussed strategies for moving forward and reviewing.

PSAT Tutoring review by Victoria in Round Rock, TX
We split time in this session between the math and writing sections. In math, we focused on graphing in the coordinate plane and recalling geometry principles. In writing, we covered parallelism, subject/verb agreement, and some punctuation rules. He learned a lot in this initial session.

PSAT Tutoring review by Abel in Round Rock, TX
The student is a very smart high school sophomore who will take the SAT next year and wants to get into top tier west coast universities. He was using an SAT prep book. It has a lot of examples and we covered math and some English. The math questions require more creativity than ACT. It tends to measure exploration rather than procedural understanding.
