Tutoring review by Padraic in Kansas City, KS
The student and I began working on problems from a new section of his textbook during our session, all of which covered the topic of integration by parts. We started with a little Physics review, going over a PowerPoint he provided on concave and convex mirror but then switched over to his Calculus assignments. He is ahead of his class on the homework, so we began by learning the fundamental formula for integration by parts and reading through the examples in his textbook. Once he felt comfortable with how much he had learned about the section, we began working through the problems, all of which were integrals that required integration by parts. I walked him through how to determine which part of the integral to define as u and which to define as dv and for each problem we then differentiated or integrated the appropriate part and plugged the result into the formula to evaluate the integral. He picked up on the material very quickly and was solving problems on his own by the end. He understood the formula very well and can now distinguish how to set up an integral and solve it using integration by parts.

Today we worked on new material from chapter 11 in the student's textbook. The sections covered area of parallelograms, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, kites, and rhombuses. The student had a little trouble working with the formulas, although he says he is able to use a formula sheet on the test. He did better when figures involved adding together areas of smaller pieces, rather than subtracting parts away.

Tutoring review by Terry in Kansas City, KS
The student requested help with two homework assignments. She had missed the class lecture for the second assignment but had notes. She worked through a question from each section of the homework and indicated she understood these well enough to proceed on her own for the rest. First homework was on using sine and cosine to find missing side lengths of triangles as route to finding areas of polygons. Second assignment was on using ratios of perimeters and areas of similar polygons to find missing side lengths or missing areas (using proportions). The student did well with all.

We covered stoichiometry and conversion problems. The student improved as the session went on. We practiced new problems and ones that she had struggled with. I gave suggestions about how to study and find information later tonight before her exam tomorrow.

The student is in the second half of general chemistry I. He just took his first test last Tuesday on rates and solubility and will need to review the material before his final (although the sooner, the better since it is still fresh in his mind). Today, we covered acidic and basic cations and anions. We reviewed a homework assignment on the material and he received one wrong answer. On Thursday, his class will be covering pH for three hours, so we will meet afterwards to review the material. If we have time, it would be a perfect time to cover the first test's materials. His class drops the lowest test grade as long as the final is higher.
