At this session, the student and I reviewed substitution reactions (Sn1 and Sn2), and all factors which would favor either. We then looked at elimination reactions (E1 and E2), and the factors which would favor each. I then had her draw a flow chart out, to determine which way a particular reaction would go (Sn1, Sn2, E1, and/or E2). I gave her several problems to complete using this flow chart. She needed help determining if a base was strong or weak. I asked that she write notes for each of these reactions, and that way, we could cover new material at our next session.

It was our first session where she had an exam directly after. We went through more strategies and tips on seeing problems differently and how to read a problem and use the key words given to get a ballpark for what and how to solve it. I really enjoy sharing this trick, as many questions given on exams fall in to the trap of showing you what to do just solely by taking stock. Outside of these esoteric strategies, I made sure our hands were dirty working problems and explaining each step and what I see when confronted by them. We have changed up our study style and she now works many of the problems, letting me know her thoughts as well and I try to pick out all the important points while we work. There is a lot to be gained by working a problem in front of someone and explaining yourself, it really refines the thoughts. She messaged me after her exam and said she thinks did alright. I am anxious to here how it turned out. She is an amazing student and always a joy to work with.
