How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is an important and challenging milestone in a child's education. An enthusiastic PSAT tutor in Providence, RI, could help make your child's educational process more efficient, more enjoyable, and less stressful.

The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT, so it mirrors that critical college admissions test in format and content. The PSAT is administered once per year, usually in October. As preparation for the SAT, the PSAT covers many of the same topics in reading, writing, and mathematics. The Evidence Based Reading and Writing section tests reading comprehension and understanding of how words are used. The Math section tests algebra, problem solving, and other aspects of quantitative reasoning. There are three versions of the test given to students in grades 8 or 9 (PSAT 8/9), 10 (PSAT 10), or 10 and 11 (PSAT/NMSQT). The National Merit Scholarship Qualification Test (NMSQT) is important because high scores make the student eligible for a National Merit Scholarship or other rewards. The test also has a time limit of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

Providence, RI PSAT tutoring
The student took a math test with a free form section and we reviewed answers that she missed. We then reviewed the writing test and reviewed common grammar items that appear and identified how to spot the error (verb tense and number agreement, parallel lists and comparisons, which/where/who(m) and passive voice). She wrote an essay as homework and we reviewed it and discussed how to make her introduction and conclusion stronger. We finally did a brief overview of test taking strategies and things to remember and do in the 24 hours prior to the test.

Then, she continued to practice the math sections of the preparation book. She did many problems and showed progress with many of the problem types. Sometimes she did misread something that caused her to make a small mistake or a small algebra error.

Providence, RI PSAT tutoring
Today we started with a math section. We jumped through and hit some of the most difficult problems and spent the majority of time using examples within the section to teach different fundamental concepts. She remembers things after being prodded in the right direction. We then switched to sentence improvement and how to attack those. We really discussed the concept of parallelism within a sentence because that shows up so much on the SAT. For homework, she needs to write her essay, work on vocab, and also complete a math and sentence improvement section.

We spent the first half of the session on math. We reviewed algebra and geometry concepts and then did a selection of algebra and geometry problems from a practice SAT test. She is getting used to the format of the test - a thorough understanding of how to approach practice problems will be the key to success. We switched gears and spent the second half of the session working on critical reading concepts. We did a vocabulary drill that involved breaking down unfamiliar vocabulary words into their roots, prefixes, and suffixes and then did a practice passage-based set of questions, which she aced. She is planning to take a full-length practice test before our next session.
