Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Providence, RI GRE tutoring
Today the student and I spent our time looking at special math problems dealing with rate and probability.  She did fairly well and seems to be understanding the concepts.  We looked at the practice tests that she has taken as well.  Her scores are not at the level of her diagnostic.  I'm troubled by this because she has been doing well in our sessions together and seems to be understanding the new material.  During her tests she seems to get overwhelmed by employing strategies.  I told her that this close to the test, if the strategy is doing more harm than help, and that we need to work around it. We have one session left before she takes the test at school.  She is taking another practice test and is going to go over all of her errors and find where her problem areas are located.  Then we are going to focus our last session on reviewing areas with which she still struggles.

We reviewed the student's latest grammar and also previous vocabulary. She is learning imperfect verbs, starting with the most common but irregular verbs: ir, ser, estar. Also, she has a lot of new vocabulary about many different themes. She is able to build sentences with the new grammar and vocabulary and she has all the new content under control. We will keep working hard before her mid term, coming up soon.

Today was very efficient practice for the quantitative section of the GRE. The student had specific questions from her studying that we worked through together, then I found additional supplemental problems to practice from the online platform. We discussed strategies for approaching the problems and focused on setting up equations that she could then solve. She has strong algebraic skills and just struggles with knowing how to set up problems.
