Providence, RI French tutoring
The student and I worked on finding equations for parabolas when given the vertex and the points on the parabola where y=0. We also looked at a graph of a parabola and determined if it was the same as or different from a given equation. The student certainly struggles a bit with math, but after showing him how to approach a problem a few times, he was starting to be able to tackle them himself.

Today the student and I went back over the questions she missed on the quantitative reasoning section. We talked about different strategies to use for questions she couldn't solve or were outside of what she has learned in math class. We talked about picking arbitrary numbers to start off with for percentage problems and problems with x in the beginning. We also covered the reading comprehension section. She finished the section (36 questions) in 20 minutes, just speeding through it. I talked strategy with her. I really want her to mark up her test when she takes it, so she promised to underline key phrases in the questions and read every passage twice.

The student and I largely covered pronunciation today. Specifically, we went through how to pronounce combinations of letters in French - for example, what sound A and I make together, or O and U. We also went through vowel/ consonant combinations like GN in 'gagne.' We made a reference sheet for pronunciation, and then practiced by reading a poem out loud together - Jean de la Fontaine's "Le Corbeau et le Renard." I will be putting together some materials for her, since her class does not use a reference book. I also recommended a study guide that I think will be helpful. She is very bright, and asks very intelligent questions. I look forward to continuing our work together.
