Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Providence, RI Elementary Math tutoring
Today the student had a math packet that included division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction problems. There were basic equations and also short answer problems. He had to recognize number patterns, draw out numerical representations, and do some rounding. He had some trouble with the 2-part short answer problems. Sometimes he'd confuse what information from the first part of the problem he needed to carry over into the second part of the problem. We worked on this by re-reading the problem over and over until he got an idea of what the question was asking him to solve. He completed the packet. The student also had a separate worksheet with fraction problems. He all but finished the last 2 sections of a problem. Fractions seem to be a newer topic for him, so working with visuals and tangibles helped immensely.

The student went back and spoke to his teacher about his missing homework, and found out that in fact he cannot turn in late work for credit. In order to raise his grade, he needs to go in at lunch and do extra credit work with the math teacher. I told him that he should go in and start the extra credit before next Tuesday, and informed his father of the situation. During the session we worked on completing the student's upcoming homework in both math and English, which he had little trouble with. We spent the rest of the session preparing for his math quiz on Monday, covering adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. He was doing excellently with the concepts by the end of the session, and should be well prepared for his quiz.

We spent most of the session doing proportions, since that is the section she is currently working on in school. We talked about different ways of understanding them, and about how to translate from the text of words problems to writing things out in cross-multiplication format. I noticed during that time that she was having some difficulty with long division, so we spend the end of the session working on that, moving from fairly typical problems to ones involving decimals and larger numbers to challenge her.

The session began with the student and I practicing for an upcoming math test. I made flash cards with the formulas for the area, perimeter, and the volume of two and three dimensional shapes. We then practiced solving several equations that required her to use the formulas to solve for x. She struggled the most with finding the area of a trapezoid. By the end of the session she was able to independently plug in the formula and find the area of a trapezoid. I left the student with extra worksheets to practice for the exam.

The student and I covered part of her math, counting by 5's both forward and backward. She did well forward, but had a little problem with backward. When she started from the backward end she did fine. We worked on math facts for addition and played the add the dice game for learning these. We also worked on carrying and she struggled with this concept so we will work more on it next time. We did discuss the concept of subtraction but did not practice it yet. She read some of a book to me and we focused on fluency. I had her use a bookmark to follow each word and this did help her. I left her a page of short vowel sound words that we had practiced together to read each night until I see her again. I also left her with a page of math addition facts to memorize.
