Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent the first session completing a diagnostic. The student did very well on the Verbal and Reading Comprehension tests, testing at about the 80th percentile in both. Thus, we will focus more energy on the Mathematics Achievement and Quantitative sections. I found the student polite and well mannered, and I look forward to continuing my sessions with her. For homework, she is to work through a basic mathematics review from her test prep book."
"The student has been working on reading comprehension and writing, with a focus on the ISEE. He is already strong as a reader, and we talked about reading more actively and noticing signal words and other cues."
"I started this session with reading comprehension, and the students used the test strategies we went over last time. They both improved tremendously on this area of the tests. After reading comp, we moved on to basic geometry, including triangles, lines, and circles. I left them with formulas and special triangles that they can study, and should memorize before the tests. Afterwards, I had them take a timed math test, and we reviewed the questions that stumped them. We specifically focused on situations in which questions try to trick you into doing more math (or more complicated math) than you need to do. We finished with grammar and style, and I had both boys practice correcting misplaced modifiers, which they learned quickly. For next session, I asked them to take a timed vocabulary test that we will go over together."
