Today the student and I worked on his biography report.  He had done some research at school and we started drafting his report. His writing was good, and we worked on adding more details, just like when he verbally tells you! He was very proud of his 3/3 on his book report.  He was also very happy to tell me his test scores from last week and he was smiling from ear to ear! I checked his math homework and we did some extra math problems that I had brought.  I asked the student to keep doing research and work on the biography, and we will revise and edit it together.

For student 1 we covered the entire present tense, including all of the irregular verbs. Since she is familiar and comfortable with regular verbs in the present tense, we cruised through that after a brief review and spent most of the time on the irregular verbs. When teaching the preterite tense, a tense she is not as familiar with, I'll break up the tense between two sessions, the first going over regular verbs and the second over irregular verbs.  For student 2, I introduced him to some basic Spanish words and concepts, such as colors, countries where Spanish is spoken, introductions, goodbyes, how to say his name, how to say he likes things, and numbers from 0 to 10.

Tutoring review by Jeremy in Doylestown, PA
Today, we began the session with a detailed problem that was meant to test the student's abilities in the math we have reviewed so far as well as in critical thinking. She responded well to it, and seemed to have thoroughly mastered percents, which are an important topic on the ISEE. Afterward, we went over her vocabulary, and  she impressed me with the number of words she recalled. We then did a passage of critical reading and went over the previous passage  she did.   I'm sure she will continue to  improve with practice. Our final topic was the essay, which we haven't touched in a while.  She still seemed familiar with the outline concept, so we talked through an essay topic in some detail. Afterward, we talked about two essays I had brought with me so we could discuss the good and bad aspects of them.  She was  very cooperative today.

The student and I didn't have much to work on today, just a worksheet over the applications of the dot product, so we reviewed the dot product and magnitude of a vector as well as the formula for finding the angle between two vectors. Finally, we practiced splitting up the vectors into the sum of its two component vectors by using the projection formula.

In this session, the student and I worked through an additional ISEE (not in her book) that I brought along. She was able to add more vocabulary words to her collection this way. We also moved through the 75 or so cards that she has already "done."  She seems to be making significant progress. We spent some time reviewing pre-writing strategies and how to write best inside a 30-minute time limitation. I had her write one essay in my presence and guided her through the pre-writing and revision stages. Along with her vocabulary words, I gave her two writing prompts to complete in 30 minutes each during the week for practice.

The student and I reviewed the math practice test sections that I asked her to complete at home. Together, we completed the timed reading portion of the practice test and found that although she was able to finish in time, she was not completely reading the passages and as a result, suffered point deductions for wrong answers. We spent the rest of the session going over reading passages and I asked her to complete the second practice test for our last session.
