Core Ideas: Place Value & Rounding

Before we estimate, we need to understand two big ideas: place value and rounding. These work together like a team!

Place Value

Each digit's position tells you its value. In 472, the 4 is worth 400, the 7 is worth 70, and the 2 is worth 2.

Rounding

Rounding replaces a number with a simpler, nearby number. You round 47 to 50 because 50 is easier to work with.

Look at the digit to the RIGHT of the place you're rounding to. If it's 5 or more, round up. If it's 4 or less, round down.

Estimating Sums & Differences

Round each number first, then add or subtract. The answer won't be exact, but it will be very close!

Here's the quick trick: Look at the ones digit of 67. It's a 7. Since 7 is 5 or more, we round up. If the ones digit were 4 or less, we would round down. Easy!

The Steps: How to Estimate

Estimating sums (addition) and differences (subtraction) takes just three steps. Let's see each one!

STEP 1 — ROUND EACH NUMBER
367 → 400 and 214 → 200
Round each number to the same place value. Here we rounded to the nearest hundred. The 6 in 367 tells us to round up. The 1 in 214 tells us to round down.
STEP 2 — ADD OR SUBTRACT THE ROUNDED NUMBERS
400 + 200 = 600
Now the math is simple! Adding 400 + 200 is much easier than adding 367 + 214.
STEP 3 — CHECK: IS YOUR ESTIMATE REASONABLE?
367 + 214 = 581 Estimate = 600 ✓ Close!
The exact answer is 581. Our estimate of 600 is only 19 away. That's close enough to pick the right answer on the ISEE!
