People have been studying shapes for thousands of years! Long ago, builders needed to understand shapes to make walls, floors, and roofs. A quadrilateral is any shape that has exactly four straight sides. The word comes from Latin: "quad" means four, and "lateral" means side.

People in ancient Egypt, Greece, and other places figured out rules about these shapes. These rules still help us today on tests like the ISEE!

Core Ideas About Quadrilaterals

Every quadrilateral has four sides and four angles. But they are not all the same! We classify (sort) them by looking at three things: how many sides are parallel (going in the same direction and never meeting), how many sides are the same length, and whether the angles are right angles (square corners, like the corner of a book).

Sides

Count the sides. Are any the same length? Mark equal sides with little tick marks.

Parallel sides run in the same direction, like railroad tracks. They never cross.

Meet the Quadrilateral Family

Look at the diagram above. The trapezoid has only one pair of parallel sides. The parallelogram has two pairs. The rhombus is a special parallelogram where all four sides are equal. The rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles. And the square is the most special of all—four equal sides AND four right angles!

The Properties That Matter

On the ISEE, you will need to quickly check a shape's properties. Here are the key things to look for.

PARALLEL SIDES
Parallel = sides that go the same direction and never meet
Think of train tracks. They always stay the same distance apart. On a shape, parallel sides are marked with small arrows (► ►).
RIGHT ANGLES
Right angle = 90° = a perfect square corner
Hold up a piece of paper. Each corner is a right angle. On a shape, right angles are marked with a tiny square in the corner.
EQUAL SIDES
Equal sides = sides with the same length
Equal sides are marked with small tick marks (|). Two tick marks on two sides means those sides are the same length.
