Where Did Clocks Come From?
Have you ever wondered how people told time before clocks were invented? A long, long time ago, people watched the sun move across the sky. They noticed that shadows got shorter and then longer each day. That was the first way humans kept track of time!

Let's look at a clock face up close. This diagram shows you every part of the clock. Notice how the big numbers are spaced equally around the circle, and between each pair of big numbers there are 4 small tick marks. That gives you 5 marks total from one number to the next (the big mark at the number plus 4 small ones).
This clock shows 3:42. Let's see how we figure that out! The short pink hand (the hour hand) has passed the 3 but hasn't reached the 4 yet, so the hour is 3. The long cyan hand (the minute hand) is between the 8 and the 9. The 8 stands for 40 minutes. We count 2 more tiny tick marks past the 8, so that gives us 42 minutes.
Notice the blue numbers around the outside of the clock. They show you the skip-count by 5s pattern — :05, :10, :15, :20, and so on. This is your shortcut! First skip-count to the nearest big number, then count the extra tiny ticks one at a time.
How to Read Time to the Nearest Minute
Here is a simple 3-step method you can use every time you look at a clock with hands.
Step 1 — Find the Hour
Look at the short hand. Which number did it just pass? That is the current hour. Remember: the hour hand moves very slowly. Between two numbers, it's still the earlier hour.
Step 2 — Skip Count by 5s
Look at the long hand. Find the big number it is closest to (or has just passed). Start at the 12 and count by 5s around the clock until you reach that number. Each big number equals 5 minutes:
Step 3 — Count Extra Tick Marks
If the long hand is not exactly on a big number, count the tiny tick marks past that number. Each tick mark = 1 more minute. Add those extra minutes to your skip-count total. That's the exact minute!
Measuring Time Intervals in Minutes
A time interval is the amount of time that passes between a start time and an end time. For example, if you start eating lunch at 12:15 and finish at 12:40, how many minutes did lunch take? That gap is the time interval.
There are two handy ways to find a time interval.
Method 1 — Count On (Number Line Hops)
Start at the earlier time. Count forward in chunks you're comfortable with — maybe by 10s, then by 5s, then by 1s — until you reach the later time. Add up all your hops.
Method 2 — Subtract
If both times share the same hour, you can subtract the starting minutes from the ending minutes. For example: 2:50 − 2:20 means 50 − 20 = 30 minutes.
In this number line, we found the time from 1:15 to 1:42. We hopped +10, +10, +5, and +2. Adding those up: 10 + 10 + 5 + 2 = 27 minutes. You can also check with subtraction: 42 − 15 = 27. Both methods give the same answer!
