Here is the big rule: add up (or subtract) what is on the left, add up (or subtract) what is on the right, then check if they match. If they match, the equation is true. If they don't, it is false.

8 − 3 = 5

Remember, the equal sign can also be at the start! Look at this: 6 = 4 + 2. The left side is 6. The right side is 4 + 2, which is 6. They are the same! So this is true. The number does not always have to be on the right.
