But school moves fast, and 'good enough to pass the test' isn't the same as truly owning a concept. Building Blocks of 4th Grade Math is the year-round class where students lock in real mastery of these skills while they're actively learning them in school. Each session reinforces the concepts your student is working on right now — deepening understanding, closing gaps before they compound, and building the kind of fluency that makes 5th grade math, standardized tests, and beyond feel manageable instead of overwhelming. What This Class Is — and Why It Matters

Every 4th grade math teacher faces the same reality: the curriculum calendar doesn't pause. Units end, grades are recorded, and the class moves on — whether every student has truly internalized the material or just cleared the bar to pass. For driven students juggling multiple subjects and a packed schedule, that tradeoff is rational in the short term. But place value, fractions, decimals, and multiplication aren't just 4th grade topics — they're the infrastructure that 5th grade math, pre-algebra, and standardized assessments are built on. Building Blocks of 4th Grade Math exists so that the pace of school doesn't quietly erode a student's true command of these skills. This is ongoing, active reinforcement — the class where concepts get practiced until they're automatic, not just familiar.

Core Topics Covered

The curriculum spans the full range of critical 4th grade math skills. Students work deeply with the base-10 number system — understanding exactly why each digit's position matters, converting confidently between standard, word, and expanded form, and extending that understanding to decimals all the way to the thousandths place. They practice ordering and comparing decimals, connecting decimal notation to its fractional equivalent, and building the number sense that makes estimation and mental math feel natural.

Fractions get serious, sustained attention. Students work with equivalent fractions, compare fractions with unlike denominators using benchmark values like one-half, and convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. They connect fractions to division, apply fraction operations in multi-step word problems, and use visual models to make abstract relationships concrete and memorable. The Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiple are treated not as isolated vocabulary words but as tools — the machinery that makes fraction simplification and common-denominator work make sense.

Multiplication and division fluency is another major thread. Students sharpen their command of multiplication with multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000, develop mental math strategies grounded in place value, and apply those skills to real-world problem-solving scenarios. Geometry rounds out the picture: students classify quadrilaterals, triangles, and other shapes by their properties; measure and identify angles; and calculate area and perimeter using the right formulas in the right situations. The course also builds early algebraic thinking — using variables to represent unknowns, solving simple equations with inverse operations, and identifying patterns in numerical data.
