Creative Writing Workshop

Few things have more power than the written word — and in Creative Writing Workshop, young authors learn to harness it in all its forms, from poetry and journalism to memoirs, plays, and songs. Each session, students examine a different element and use of creative writing, then put it into practice by writing pieces of their own. Along the way, they'll build a writing portfolio they can be proud of and discover the kinds of writing they love most.

Trying Out Different Kinds of Writing You'll try stories, poems, true stories from your own life, and scripts, and discover a writing voice that sounds like nobody else.

Creating Characters and Plots You'll invent characters with clear wants and real flaws, then plan a story with a beginning, a big exciting moment, and an ending that wraps things up.

Painting Pictures With Words You'll describe places using sights, sounds, and smells, try similes and metaphors that are all your own, and write dialogue that sounds like real people talking.

Polishing Your Portfolio You'll read your work again to make it stronger, share pieces with classmates for kind and helpful feedback, and collect your best writing in your own portfolio.
