What This Course Is About

Algebra in Real Life is built on a simple but powerful premise: algebra makes more sense when you can see exactly where it shows up in the world around you. This course moves away from abstract drills and toward concrete, relatable scenarios — calculating what a ride-share will cost, figuring out how many hours you need to work to afford something, analyzing a player's batting average, or deciding whether a sale price is actually a good deal. Every algebraic concept is introduced through a real problem worth solving.

Core Skills You'll Build

Students work extensively with linear equations — learning to identify variables, coefficients, and constants, and then using those building blocks to model situations involving wages, costs, distances, and more. A major focus is developing fluency with slope and y-intercept: not just calculating them, but explaining what they mean. When a line represents a cell phone plan, the slope is the cost per gigabyte and the y-intercept is the monthly base fee — and students learn to read graphs and equations with that kind of contextual fluency. Students also work with algebraic inequalities to represent real-world constraints, and get introduced to systems of equations as a way to compare two options and find where they intersect.

The course covers a wide and engaging range of applications. In financial contexts, students calculate discounts, apply sales tax, find break-even points, and explore simple and compound interest. In sports analytics, they use algebra to compute batting averages, free throw percentages, and scoring projections. Distance, rate, and time problems bring motion into the picture — planning road trips, calculating speeds, and visualizing travel scenarios graphically. Students also tackle unit conversions for cooking, construction, and travel, and apply geometric reasoning to practical home improvement problems like measuring and building shelves.

How the Class Works
