Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week was an incredible breakthrough for the student. Her science score jumped from 16-18 last week to 26-29 this week! Her writing score has also made good progress, now looking to be in the 24-26 range. We will continue to work through these sections so that she'll see a handsome improvement on her test in a couple weeks."
"I am really pleased with the student's progress. His math is really good. He understands the science, but he needs practice in making the logical inferences that follow from the graphs and charts. Just a little more work on English is necessary. I think he is in a good position at this point."
"For this session, we switched focus to the ACT, since the student will be taking it within a week of taking the SAT. This week's sessions were his first exposure to the ACT. We discussed the differences between the ACT and the SAT and then began to work on questions from the science section. He has a good grasp overall of the skills needed to do well on the science section, although he had a little bit more difficulty with questions related to interpreting an experiment. In addition to the science, we also worked on the ACT math. Since he is pretty strong in math, we spent our time working on the most difficult problems and on trigonometry questions, since those do not appear on the SAT and he has done less work with them. In general, he seemed more comfortable with these problems than the difficult math problems on the SAT, since the ACT math questions tend to be phrased in a more straightforward manner."
"The student and I tried a new strategy. She first skimmed through the reading passage and tried to answer the questions. This strategy ended up taking more time than the previous one, where she looked through the questions first for keywords, so we agreed for her to switch back to the old reading strategy. We spent the rest of the session practicing the writing section (essay). I had her write a complete essay to get used to the format, though I did not time her. Her writing was clear and concise for the most part."
"The student prepared the math and science sections of Test 2 in the ACT practice book. We reviewed math questions that were difficult and approaches to science questions. I taught her basic log rules, as well as explained to her radians and degrees when figuring out signs of sine, cosine, and tangent functions by quadrant. She agreed that she would complete additional practice tests between now and our last session."
"We discussed the student's outline and how to strengthen her arguments. I will be assigning her another essay or two for practice next week, after her finals are through. We then went over Reading Comprehension strategies and did a set of practice passages with discussion. She is handling the English and Reading Comprehension sections very well at this time, so for the next session we will be returning to Math and Science for more practice in those weaker areas."
"The student and I worked on creating a plan for our time together. Our biggest focus will be on time management. She seems very smart and just has to get used to the format of the assessment. We focused mainly on reading today."
"The student and I continued working on the English and reading sections of the assessment. She completed two English passages and one reading passage. After each passage, we discussed her responses together. Then, I explained one strategy for approaching the writing section of the assessment. We reviewed how to make an outline and how to structure an essay. With the remaining time, the student practiced making an outline for a writing section essay."
"Today, I gave the student an overview of the subjects we did not have a chance to fully cover when we met on Wednesday. She worked through half of a math section, then we reviewed the problems she missed, as well as those she didn't know how to work. After that, we worked through two reading passages together (a social science and a humanities passage), and I showed her how to annotate passages for efficiency. Finally, we had about 15 minutes left, so we worked one science passage before breaking for the day."
"After going over the last 20 questions of a previously assigned math section, we continued to work on English. The student has a good grasp of grammar and punctuation. I asked her to complete the remaining passages in the English section and am sending her a list of commonly used vocabulary words. We will go over English, reading, and writing next time."
"We did practice from various sections, initially focusing on the science. The student did well here. We then practiced through a few English sections, where the student had no problems. We also brushed through a handful of more difficult math problems. We then finished with a few passages of reading."
"The student and I spent the first hour going over the math section from her practice test this week. For the second hour, we did some timed science passages."
