We worked through an entire practice section, passage by passage, working on his understanding, his confidence with the test, and the test taking skills. Going slowly, the student scores in the upper 500's. He told me he is getting extra time, so that will help. He is also under strict orders to do a LOT of homework/practices this week-- the more he practices, the better he will do. We spent the last thirty minutes timing a section and going over it. We will go over everything he does for homework in our session next week.

For the first session, we talked about the test in general. I tried to assess strengths and weaknesses and what the student is hoping to get out of our sessions. We then dove right into the verbal section, as he is comfortable in math. He is incredibly bright and has good instincts and a good foundation for the verbal section. I think that, with his foundation, he could really benefit from simply working on "test-taking strategy." In fact, I think there is a lot of room for growth there because, like I said, the fundamentals are clearly there.

Today we went over the essay the student wrote for the essay section of a practice test. Then we practiced sentence correction questions with an emphasis on systematically applying grammar rules to spot mistakes and rule out possible answers. Finally, we ended with a review of linear equations and combinatorics, and a grab-bag of different math practice problems.

The student and I covered math and reading sections today. Last weekend he took a full length test and mentioned that he was not able to finish the math section so we went through problems together to ensure that the reason he couldn't finish was because he was feeling fatigued because of the length and not because he didn't know the concepts. He demonstrated conceptual knowledge well. However, there were some things, particularly complex function problems that he was having some trouble with. We isolated these problems and he practiced them to make sure he understood. In the writing section, he demonstrated improvement with the error identifications but the sentence corrections were tripping him up. Continuing to make his own corrections for the error identifications after he has identified where the error is will help him to practice correct usage.
