How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, is essentially the practice test for the SAT. The PSAT is also referred to as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or the NMSQT. There are three versions of the test, each of which allows a student two hours and 45 minutes to complete. There is the PSAT/NMSQT, which is taken in 10th or 11th grades in the fall, which may be used for a scholarship. There is also the PSAT 10, which covers the same content but may not be used for the scholarship. The PSAT 8/9 serves as a baseline for student progress. It's taken in the 8th and 9th-grade years and has a possible score of 1440. All of the versions consist of a Math section and an Evidence-based Reading and Writing section. If your child is preparing to take their PSAT, offer them personalized guidance with one of the PSAT tutors in Portland, Oregon. Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

Portland, OR PSAT tutoring
The student and I focused primarily on the PSAT Writing section during this session, as it was an area that we had touched upon but not yet fully explored. We went over everything from sentence completion to sentence equivalence, anticipating answers in the grammar correction section, and evaluating what was necessary in sentences via identification of clauses, subjects, verbs, and objects. Out of all of the subjects, this is the least emphasized in the PSAT but the oft overlooked one that can leave a significant amount of points on the table; thus, I really want to establish her foundation in this section. We went over 2 writing sections, taking them both in time-pressured situations, and she did above average on them! Afterwards, we covered a bit more reading, but, other than that, it was a writing-focused session.

We focused exclusively on math again in this session. The student shows signs of improvement. He has as much as ten minutes left at the end of a section and spots his errors as soon as I read him the correct answer.

The student will need to improve her vocabulary. We also reviewed some math work. She needs a little more practice with function notation, but she handled a variety of problems well.

We discussed essay tips, and I gave her a prompt, for which she outlined a potential essay. She went through the first 13 questions in the writing section of Test 1.
