A good foundation in precalculus is essential for success in calculus, which is used in almost every scientific and technical field. Calculus is used to solve problems that show change. Specifically, it is used to define the rate of change, predicting the amount of change, and understanding the quality of that change. It is employed in careers such as statistics, engineering, construction, and most science-related fields. Precalculus covers topics such as real and complex numbers, functions and their inverses, solving equations, and logarithms and may be confusing. During this session, we worked through more practice exams. The student and I reviewed for a proficiency test. The proficiency test was over skills he had learned last year and in Algebra 1. They do these four times a year to make sure the students still know and remember how to do all of the skills from previous courses.

Initial Session: 9/24: 7:30 - 9 The student was well prepared on his focus for our first session - the graphing of higher order functions that are transformed from their parent function. We had quite a few problems assigned in this area and were able to cover the concepts associated with all of them. The rules that we stressed were - always draw the parent function first; put the new function into standard form to locate vertical (associated with y or f(x)) and horizontal (associated with x) transformations and perform each one separately. In many functions use symmetry to sketch the new function. Recall that y = sqrt(x) is only in the positive y quadrants and that the functions reflected across the y- axis change the sign of the x coordinate and those across the x-axis change the y coordinate.

The student told me how the ACT went on Saturday before we got started working on pre-calc. She had an optional test review that we worked through together. Two of the hardest problems she decided to skip, since they were so much tougher than the rest of the review and there were only two of them.

Today the student and I focused on graphing trigonometric functions while notating the domain and range and solving inverse trig functions. She seems to really understand the topic and is well prepared for the quiz on Friday. She did not have any further questions when we ended the session. We only worked for 1.25 hours this session since it was a mini-session, so the first .25 hours she will not be billed for in the next session.
