How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Many important abilities rely on the proper development of phonics. Children often struggle trying to pick up the fluency in phonics that they need to read, speak, and spell properly. If your child is having a difficult time reading or speaking, a tutor may be able to help. All of the tutors whom Varsity Tutors may connect you with in Portland are skilled in teaching phonics.

Phonics is the classification of speech sounds. Most adults use phonics every day without having to think about it. It is a skill that we learn at an early age and keep through adulthood. Phonics covers topics like short vowels, long vowels, consonants, and syllables. Phonics is a skill that we use while speaking, reading, and writing.

The student got a perfect score on her spelling test that we practiced for last week and was very excited. We worked on lowercase letters and talked about making sure that the spelling words are written in lowercase. She read two stories to me from her school reader and I read the third one to her. We did some word work with the -og word family. She did some pages in a phonics workbook.

We started with phonics drills. The student really likes the spelling because it comes easy to her, so I am trying to do more reading. We did some words with the sp- blend. We did words that end in -s since she said she is learning that in class. We discussed how some words that end in -s sound like they end in -z. She asked me about words ending in =e so we did some words with final silent e but she didn't seem to grasp it yet. We practiced reading a level 1 reader. It had many words with digraphs and two syllables, so she mostly tries to memorize it. She read some short i sentences and did a good job. She wrote some short i words and did a good job.

The student and I continued working through the Wilson program. We focused on "nonsense" words (to make sure she is confident with all letter sounds) and on the "qu" and "wh" sounds. She did very well on her spelling test.

This is the last time I will see the pupil before his test on Monday. We finished work his teacher sent home to prepare him for the test. We also continued reading one of his personal books. The book was far above his reading level, which caused fatigue, so in the future we need to read books that are at or slightly above his reading level to keep him motivated and confident. When he misses a word, he is able to self-correct without prompting from me.

The student did very well. We reviewed some long vowel words, and then I combined long vowels and blends. We read two pages of our book. She received two practice books as a present, so we did one page of her shapes book (tracing, writing and identifying rectangles) in lieu of our handwriting practice. Then, we did a rhyming song. She is doing a great job at remembering what we cover! She even remembered that "love" is a tricky word, and was able to identify all of the letters, in the correct order with a little help. I did not leave her with any extra practice and I have no concerns.

We began our session Thursday with our normal review of previously learned skills, focusing on letter and sound recognition. Our work has concentrated on short vowel sounds and sight words 'a' and 'e'. At this point, the goal is to get the girls to begin moving from sounding out their words by blending sounds together, to understanding meaning and not simply memorization. The girls are making steady progress, and in this session we completed our 'e' sight word list. We focused on reading sentences and moving them towards more independence with sounding out words through blending. We finished the session with a comprehension task of matching pictures to the sentences. Their mother sat in on the session to learn the blending technique I was using with her daughters so that she can practice with them independently.
