Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Portland, OR Biology tutoring
During this session I helped the student understand cell division and the cell cycle for her upcoming Biology test on Tuesday. We went over the stages of Interphase and Mitosis that leads to the division of the cell. She became extremely comfortable with the terms and processes by the end of the session. She did very well on several biology quizzes I gave her in the last 20 minutes of the session, making barely any errors.

Today the student and I continued to prepare her for her exam tomorrow. We reviewed all topics for the exam including the parts of the cell, the phospholipid bilayer, integral membrane proteins and their functions and the roles of channel proteins. We discussed solutions being hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic and covered visual pictures until she understood the concepts. By the end of the session we felt that she is well prepared for her exam.

The student and I worked together today reviewing enzymes, diffusion/osmosis, and active and passive transport in the context of two essays he needed to write. He was able to describe an enzyme and its function to me and utilized his class notes and internet to find two examples of biological enzyme-catalyzed reactions to write about in his essay. We then looked at active transport of large/polar molecules and passive transport of water down its concentration gradient. Using this information, he wrote an essay about a hypothetical cell that needed to obtain outside large nutrients and also balance its salt content. In our next session, we will review the new material he learned in geometry, including bisecting angles.

The student and I went over problem set #3 today. This problem set goes into detail about plant hormones, the movement of water and solutes through plants, and how these factors impact plant growth, structure, or death. The professor went over some of this material in class today, so he had a better idea of some questions that we could not answer yesterday. He is also planning on going in to speak with the professor to straighten out those questions which we could not solve ourselves.

The student and I reviewed chapter 11 of his biology textbook, focusing on understanding the vocabulary words. We discussed Mendelian inheritance, genes, alleles, meiosis, genotype vs. phenotype, and different types of allelic dominance. I tested his understanding of the material by asking him the review questions at the end of each section. We began working on chapter 14 and will continue with it during our next session.

We spent this session reviewing what he was learning in biology, as well as organizing some of his binders. For biology, we rehashed over topics such as organelles of the cell, differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, plasma cell membrane, and osmosis and diffusion. I know that he understands these concepts well. I'm working on trying to get him excited enough about the material so that he wants to learn more. He has already shown excitement in algebra, so I know it is possible with biology as well.
