How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

The ACT is one of the most important exams you may take in your high school career. Everything from college admissions to scholarships and merit-based financial aid rests, at least in part, on this nearly four hour long exam. The exam has four sections: reading, English, science, and mathematics. In addition, there is an optional writing portion that requires you to create an essay in 40 minutes, to be scored along with the exam. Many colleges require students to take this essay portion and submit the score with their application. With so many important things relying on your scores from this one exam, it is important to perform your best. Varsity Tutors is here to help. We may find you one of the most experienced ACT tutors in Portland, OR, to try to help you get the score you want.

It may be hard to find the right tutor, and we're here to help. Our educational directors in Portland are skilled at considering all of the important traits to find the perfect ACT tutor for you. The first and most important thing we consider is the areas you have difficulties with on the exam. If you struggle with the math section, we want to find the tutor most qualified to teach you math. If reading is your sticking point, we want to find a tutor who may teach you to do the reading sections quickly and accurately. Next, we consider your preferred learning style. All of the ACT tutors we may find you in Portland are skilled at teaching concepts in a variety of different ways, but it is best to have one especially skilled at teaching in the way you learn. Finally, we consider your personality and interests. If your tutor is similar in interests and personality to you, learning may not be deterred by personality conflicts and sessions may be easily related to the topics you find most interesting. Tutors may meet with you in person at the location of your choosing, or online through the Varsity Tutors live learning platform.

Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

Portland, OR ACT tutoring
For this session, the student requested that we look at a more diverse range of topics. We reviewed some general standardized test-taking strategies and discussed time management on the Reading and Science sections at greater length. We also reviewed his past "real" ACT for errors and agree he can greatly improve his score.

The student and I went through her practice test and found she had done very well! We went through the math concepts that she had forgotten and reviewed grammar concepts, but overall it was very good. The main thing now is making sure that she can answer the questions within the time and not making silly mistakes.

The student and I continued our focus on reading and science today, by working through a timed section of each. He did quite well in science, finishing on time with good accuracy. We discussed strategies on what he might do if he is halfway through the reading section and finding that he is low on time and decided that there may be instances where it would be prudent to attack three sections with high accuracy instead of rushing through all four with low accuracy. We also discussed scenarios for what he needs to score in each section if he wants to bring his score up to 30. For homework, I assigned the student more reading practice, as he will need to continue to get more comfortable with the challenging time constraints of the reading section.

The student and I had our last session today. We started by reviewing a timed essay he wrote yesterday and going over ways he could improve his score. We discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the essay and the best approaches to get a higher score. For today we focused on mainly working on a large number of problems so the student could be exposed to the different contents and question types before he takes his ACT this weekend. The student did very well in the English and Science sections. I think after our session he has a better grasp of how to find answers for the Reading section, and we worked on reading the question carefully in Math. Overall, I think that, although we only a few sessions to focus fully on the ACT, the student is very well prepared for his test and will do extremely well.

The student and I went over one ACT writing prompt in detail. We discussed strategies for creating a strong argument, looking at examples from the ACT site. I had her write out a thesis, topic sentences for examples, and a conclusive statement for one prompt. We then looked at 10 other prompts, discussing difficulties she'd face with them and strategies to overcome them. I advised her to keep her essays formal and to transform personal experiences into third person. We then went over four reading passages (one of each type). I taught her to look for key words from the questions and to prioritize the order in which she did the questions.
