Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Tonight we worked on reviewing and practicing regrouping. We discussed the different place values and, when regrouping, what that really means. We talked about how, when counting in the tens column and you get to a hundred, that hundred needs to be moved to the hundreds column. The same for hundreds and thousands. We did a few problems together with discussion, and then she worked on a few herself and explained it to me. Then we looked at how to tell time and solving word problems. We drew out the problem to solve it. After that was complete, we read a story together, taking turns, and then she answered some comprehension questions with a bit of inference. She worked very hard tonight! I recommend to continue working with online programs since it is still spring break. I will be in contact with the family to see if further work would be desired."
"We started with flash cards. I provided some direct instruction on different ways to add to help the student add faster. We then read a passage from a magazine and worked on Main Idea. We then worked on creating pictographs using his collection of toy cars. He was very engaged when we were working on pictographs. :)"
"The student had comprehension homework, she read aloud and answered the questions. Then I reviewed and corrected with her. I taught a lesson on context clues and reviewed the skills and strategies for using context clues which are helpful hints about the meanings of unknown words. She was very responsive to learning this concept."
"The student worked on word problems involving division of multiples of ten and estimating quotients. Then she analyzed a nonfiction article about daylight savings time and answered questions about the article. Her self-esteem has greatly improved over the past few months. She is more confident in her ability to think through, analyze, and solve different kinds of problems. She is learning to take pride in her creative thinking."
"The student and I started the lesson by looking over his math workbook assignment page 23. He had finished the workbook before I arrived, but there were 5 problems that he had to correct. We went over the importance of double-checking work, especially when writing equations/expressions and working with more complicated math problems that use parentheses. He also had completed his grammar exercises, and he worked to identify and correct different sections of this work, especially the problems with prefixes. We finished the lesson by him completing the rest of his extra-credit math homework, focusing on rounding and estimating. He completed this extra work with little difficulty other than rushing and making simple subtraction mistakes."
"I was pleased that the student had done all of her reading homework and did a good job. She is a very hard worker but needs to do more work on her own. Also on a good note, we finished reading "Sophie the Awesome" and are going to start on "Sophie the Hero," and the student practiced the 3 and 4 times tables."
