"In today's session we worked through a lab that the student was assigned in class. The lab involved finding rate of reactions for reactions involving calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. We were stuck for a while because the data included mass and time and to calculate rate of reaction the official way is to use concentration and time. However, we ended up figuring out that her teacher just wanted them to use mass in place of concentration. We worked through determining the rates by plugging the tables into excel and finding the corresponding trend lines and calculating the derivative equations to find the slope, thus finding the rate."
"The student and I went over how to do dimensional analysis with different conversions in mass, volume, and length. We also went through the process for converting to moles from grams and liters and how to go to molecules using Avogadro's number."
"During this session we reviewed briefly some basic IR spectroscopy principles before recapping the important points of substitution reactions. I assigned the student some practice problems from chapter 7 to help reinforce the concepts we discussed. I also briefly covered the basics of elimination reactions to lay groundwork for Thursday's session, where we will go over the big picture of these four reaction mechanisms and begin discussing specific reactions necessary to organic synthesis problems."
