Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did really well on the homework. She shows outstanding critical thinking strategies and picks up on new methods. She was assigned more homework and looks forward to starting on the writing section."
"Today we covered the ACT science reasoning section. We covered some strategies for the 3 different types of passages. The student took several practice passages that were timed. We tracked time and score and projected what the equivalent score would be. Next session we will cover English."
"Since our last meeting, Student A has taken an additional practice test, and Student B took the majority of one as well. Unfortunately, Student B was unable to have a new score, but Student A's scores were up in all categories, and this news began our session on Monday in a really positive way. Initially, we went through some of the questions that had given the girls problems, and we were able to identify that the girls had some issues with "new symbol" math problems and worked through several after noticing this. The girls also mentioned some uncertainties regarding the SAT essay insofar as conclusions and transitions are concerned. I told the girls that conclusions for these types of essays generally do one of the following three things: refine or clarify the original thesis, suggest a solution to the problem, or mention the broader implications of the argument. Additionally, I told the girls some of the key transition words that are often used, and we talked about some of the different movements a transition can make (from general to specific, historical to personal, etc.). Generally speaking, I'm confident in the girls' abilities at this point in time, and I'm enjoying getting the chance to watch as they gradually refine their already considerable abilities."
