Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Pomona, CA Test Prep tutoring
We began by going over an essay that the student had written between sessions. We discussed lengthening the essay and fleshing out the examples a little more. We also discussed the importance of including something about refuting the opposition's claims. We then moved on to the science portion of the practice test that she completed between sessions. We reviewed the questions that she missed. It seems like she has a good understanding of the different types of passages and data presentations and only seems to miss one question per section. We discussed using process of elimination on more wordy questions to find the right answer. For the next 30 minutes we worked on the English section. We did practice questions from the book and worked on "reading aloud silently" to find the answers more clearly. For the last portion we worked on the essay section again. We timed 5 minutes for outlining and then discussed what she had decided on. Then she spent 25 minutes writing the essay and we discussed ways to improve it at the end. She will complete 2 sections from the next practice test before the next session.

In this session, the student and I reviewed all four sections of reading, math, science, and English. We started by working through two reading passages. I timed her as she worked through the questions for each passage - she did better with time, finishing 9 out of 10 questions for each passage in the allotted time. In answering the questions, she did well finding concrete details by going back to the passage. We also talked in general about how she should approach the reading section on the ACT. Then, we moved on to work on one English passage. I also timed her for this passage, and she finished it in a good amount of time. She had no major problems with the questions on the English passage. The next section we worked on was math. Here, we focused on word problems and on problems requiring knowledge of formulas. On some word problems, the student had trouble setting up an equation for finding a strategy to solve for the answer, so we practiced looking at parts of the word problem and relating them to an equation. Finally, we also worked on one science passage. I also timed her on this passage; she did well on questions involving finding specific information from charts and from the passage, but had trouble understanding the experiments described in the passage generally and answering questions about hypothetical situations. We went over the passage and its charts to understand them better. We also talked about the meaning of experimental assumptions and how, for questions about hypothetical situations, she could find the answer by generalizing from information in the charts and passage, even if the answer is not explicitly stated. I recommended that she continue to check her timing for the reading and science sections using a watch or a clock, and that she bring a watch with her when she takes the ACT. I wish her the best of luck!

The student started this session by taking a practice ACT reading test from start to finish. I then gave him advice to help him improve his performance in this section. I advised him not to dismiss sections. It is important to take each section seriously and at least take time to answer the easy questions even if you have to guess on the difficult ones. We also decided that next time he takes a practice test, he should write the subject alongside each paragraph so he has an easier time navigating through the passage. I will email him a practice reading test to take on his own before our final tutoring session. He should complete the whole reading test as if it were test day and use his study guide to review his answers. On Thursday, we will discuss how his independent practice test went and try another one. If he and his parents like, I am available to meet with him for more practice on Friday.

The student and I covered the writing section and non-calculator section of practice test 3, and started the calculator section. She is definitely improving. On the writing section, we have narrowed her weaknesses down to three identifiable and consistent areas: punctuation, vocabulary, and sentence order. Knowing this will enable us to tackle them more readily. On the math section, she is now writing everything down, which is perfect. As she picks up on the techniques to simplify her algebra and handle things she doesn't know how to do, she'll get more done on it.
