Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began, as always, with a vocab quiz. The student continued his positive results from our last vocab quiz, so I have confidence that his new method of studying is working. We then reviewed the results of a homework writing section and the create-your-own passage based section. I think he has made a nice progression in understanding the goals of the exercise, but I will keep an awareness over our next few session to see that he is successfully applying these ideas to the questions. We then moved on to discuss the results of the practice exam. We will be discussing the specific scores during our next session, but we spent time discussing the overall trend of his scores. Based on his score averages that we discussed last time, he successfully increased his scores in the Critical Reading and Writing sections."
"For this week, we focused primarily on math and critical reading. For math, we compiled a list of various strategies we could use when beginning unfamiliar or difficult problems, and we practiced using them. We also did lessons on probability, factoring, special triangles, and the application thereof. These refreshers were definitely helpful for her, since it had been a while since she had learned them in school. For critical reading, we worked on vocabulary and passage/answer dissection. She has been doing a great job marking up her passages and identifying key points. She was definitely more comfortable with these areas. I left her a variety of practice sections focusing on the topics we reviewed during the week."
"We went over general ACT strategies, and then reviewed different strategies and questions on the ACT Math section. We focused on algebra and geometry."
"The student and I did some general math overview today. We tried doing one problem, and it became clear that she didn't really understand what the problem was asking. I went through a wide array of domain/range example problems with her, including ones with squares and absolute values. We discussed what happens when the denominator equals zero (very, very undefined). We will continue to do a lot of math over the next few weeks, because she needs review on basic algebra, including graphing."
"The student and I did some reading practice problems and then math. I think she is getting better on both counts, especially math. She seems to know her way around getting started better now. Her homework is to read pages 260 to 320 in her SAT book."
"The student and I did some stoichiometry practice for chemistry, as she requested more help with this skill, and then we worked on math for the rest of the session, focusing on systems of graphs and inequalities."
