Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed concepts related to SSAT Middle and Upper Math and Verbal tests. Both students performed very well, with additional practice encouraged with the Verbal flashcards. Both boys presented positive, motivated responses and both were engaged throughout the session. Reading Diagnostic #3 should be completed prior to our next session."
"We covered marginal rate of time preference, budget constraints, and delved into compensated and equivalent variance. These are all new subjects for him. He still struggled with putting together a budget line but this improved at the end of the session. We continued his problem set, which we will finish Wednesday and prepare for his test."
"The student and I began the session by continuing our lesson on graphing. We created a bar graph based upon favorite animals, and interpreted the information. We then spent time reviewing addition strategies (recalling facts, drawing a picture, counting on, and using a ten frame). She added three digit numbers today. We practiced proper naming of three digit numbers also. To conclude the lesson, she read and interpreted data from a pictograph about favorite ice cream flavors. All in all, her focus was good."
"The student and I began work on a test that was just released recently. This is an excellent test to work off of because it most accurately represents what the ACT is currently testing. We started with Math, and he did well, finishing the first 50 questions in 30 minutes and answering 47 of them correctly. We were also able to go over some science, English, and reading comp. We will finish the test in the next session, as we are now going through sections at an incredible rate."
"The student and I worked through the first three sections in the Introduction to Statistics text. We learned lots of different vocabulary about the types of variables and ways to display graphs. We also discussed how to calculate the mean, median, and mode as well as the variance and the standard deviation."
"Today we discussed Aboriginal art and looked at pictures I had taken during my visit to the National Gallery in Canberra, focusing on ways to help the student express himself in everyday terms and put sentences together. After some time with this, we continued with "Die Physiker," up to the top of p. 57."
